Is Parenting Right For Me?

Your Choices

Explore the Option of Parenting

Now that you’ve taken a look at your own goals, let’s look at some of the topics your personal pregnancy navigator will discuss with you as you explore the option of parenting.

Physically & Emotionally Providing

  • Are you physically and emotionally able to provide for your child?
  • Can you get your child to doctors and medical care when needed and pay for those services?
  • Are you able to provide appropriate clothing, food and housing for your child?
  • What life do you want for your child?
    • For example, do you want your child to play in sports or go to the zoo?
    • Are you able to pay for non-essentials that you would like your child to have and experience?
  • Is your job or access to financial support stable? Can you count on this for years to come?

Your Education

  • If you plan to further your education, how will you manage raising a baby and attending classes?

Employment

  • If you want to change jobs, will you be able to find reliable and safe childcare during work hours?
  • Will the income be enough to support you and your child?

Social Life

Imagine it’s a weekend night and your friends are all getting ready to go out.  They are talking about the fun they are going to have.  You aren’t able to go because you need to stay home and take care of your child.

  • Will this bother you?
  • Will it cause you to feel resentment towards your child?

Now imagine that this is the 4th, 5th, 6th weekend in a row where your friends are out and you are home.

  • Will this bother you now?

Relationships

You don’t need to be in a relationship to parent a child.  However, you do need to consider the impact that relationship will have on your child.

  • Do you want your child to be a part of this relationship?

Living Arrangements

If You Are Living With Your Parents, Friends or Other Family:

  • Will you be able to continue living there with your child?
  • Is this a place where you would want to raise a child?

If You Are Living On Your Own:

  • Is this a place where you would want to raise a child?
  • Will you be able to continue to afford to live where you are living when you add in the expense of raising a child?
  • If your current living arrangement safe for you and a child?

Housing Insecurity

  • Do you struggle with homelessness or housing insecurity?
  • How will that ultimately affect you and your child?
