Finding Our Perfect Match: An Adoption Journey with the S Family and All About U Adoptions

Today, we are happy to share the incredible S Family adoption story. The S Family found their perfect match through All About U Adoptions. They emphasize the importance of patience, navigating unexpected challenges, and the unique experiences of each adoption process. Describing their open adoptions, they offer insights into maintaining positive relationships with birth parents while setting boundaries. They share valuable advice for other adoptive families, stressing the enduring challenges and joys of raising adopted children.

How did you find AAU Adoptions and what made you choose them?

In 2006, when searching for the right agency and a child,  another agency called us to let us know AAU had a child needing a family. It was a perfect match!

What advice would you give to other families considering adoption?

Be patient!! Be prepared for the unexpected. There is no true timeline (we did interstate adoption the second time that took forever. The first time was like a whirlwind and she was her very quickly -private adoption). There are no two adoptions that are alike. It can be very stressful and difficult, so just be prepared for ups and downs. Keep your end result as a focus so you don’t give up!! Best of luck!!

What services and resources did you find most beneficial working with AAU?

AAU is very friendly and personable. It was very helpful that they were always available via phone at any time when you needed them. They were always there!  Being one of their first clients, it was so many years ago I cannot remember all the services…and I’m sure they have evolved into new and updated services with their great quality!

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the adoption process, and how did you overcome them?

How to adopt, where to go, and what agency to use. We searched the internet and made calls, even visited with DSS for the possibility of fostering. Nothing was falling in place until another agency referred us to AAU with a child already needing a home.

What type of adoption openness do you share with the birth parents?

Now, I send letters and pictures at Christmas to my birth mom. (Child is almost 20). I was sending a letter and pictures up to 4x a year. We offer for her to visit with birthday party or just meet somewhere to see each other. Over the years, it happened about…I believe 4x. Birth mom’s mother is more involved. Mostly via Facebook.

Our youngest two…we had an agreement with birth dad but only one letter went through and the rest were returned.

Depending on the answer, has open adoption (if applicable) worked for your family, and what advice would you give to families considering open adoption? It is fine. Remember..birth parents are part of your child’s life, too. You may need to set some boundaries. The first year or two was a little rocky with our oldest child’s birth mom…but remember, she lost her girl. After a little time had passed by, our relationship got stronger. You are in bliss when you first get your child…one needs to remember they are a very important part of their life.

Looking back, would you have done anything differently in your adoption journey?

It’s all done…what a journey they were. Why would you want to change history?

Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you would like to share with other adoptive families?

The challenge has only started once you bring your kids home. Guess what? We’ve reached “adulthood” (technically) on two of them, and that’s a whole new challenge. (Btw they are all children with different needs)

What advice would you give to families who are just beginning their adoption journey, particularly in terms of staying patient and hopeful throughout the process?

You can do it! Stay strong and don’t let anyone discourage you! If it’s getting to be too much….put it away…give it a break and come back to it in a few days.
